Rethinking Education in the AI Era: Shorten Degrees and Redesign Assessments

The author argues that universities penalizing students for using LLMs to complete homework are completely missing the point. Instead of restricting AI tools, higher education should redesign its intellectual assessments entirely.
Rather than relying on rudimentary memorization tasks, schools should challenge students to design novel solutions from first principles using these new tools. If applied correctly, AI could significantly shorten the time spent in academia, potentially condensing traditional undergraduate and graduate programs into just 2-3 years of intense, critical-thinking-focused work.
