Tao’s ICM 2026 hypothesis: AI may soon handle a meaningful share of research math

AlexKontorovich · x · 2026-07-25

Terrence Tao’s ICM 2026 talk starts from a working hypothesis: AI tools will reasonably soon be able to perform a reasonable fraction of research-level mathematical tasks, with acceptable levels of success, quality, supervision, and cost.

He then asks what follows if that hypothesis holds. The central question is not just capability, but the consequences for the mathematics community, its goals, and how mathematical research is organized in an AI-saturated future.
