NVIDIA and Microsoft back open-weight models as key to U.S. AI leadership

NVIDIA circulated a letter on open-weight models arguing that they are essential to American AI leadership.

The letter, co-signed by Microsoft, Palantir, ServiceNow, Box and others, says open weights expand access so startups, universities, hospitals, factories and small businesses can use frontier capabilities without renting them from a few closed labs.
It argues open weights increase competition, let organizations keep control of their own models and data, and improve security through transparency rather than relying on a handful of black-box providers.
The letter also claims open models can strengthen AI safety by enabling broader benchmarking, red-teaming, and vulnerability discovery.
Its policy ask: avoid premature restrictions on open models that could stifle competition or push innovation overseas, while supporting shared assets such as datasets, tools and evaluation frameworks.
