Box signed an open-weights AI letter, and Aaron Levie used the post to argue why the approach matters.
He says open-weight models help the industry move faster by enabling more post-training specialization for narrow domains such as finance, life sciences, legal, and healthcare. He also argues that a more distributed model ecosystem improves safety and cyber experimentation, because different groups can try different defenses instead of relying on one dominant stack.
A third point is practical: in compute-constrained settings, open approaches let teams adapt and optimize models in ways that closed systems make harder.
