Jacob Tsimerman says AI could force mathematics to move beyond human problem solving

Jacob Tsimerman argues that mathematical research is deeply centered on problem solving, so if AI becomes substantially better than humans at it, the daily work of mathematicians will have to shift toward something meaningfully different.
He also pushes back on the idea that math is only virtuous when pursued purely for truth. He says he does mathematics because he enjoys it, is good at it, finds it beautiful, and wants that motivation to be de-stigmatized. He frames mathematicians as people with ordinary needs and multiple sources of meaning, not just truth-seeking machines.
