Industry coalition urges Congress to preserve access to open-weight models
NVIDIA, Palantir, Replit, Microsoft, CrowdStrike, Dell and other signatories are backing a message to Congress arguing that U.S. AI leadership should be measured by a broad, open ecosystem rather than a single frontier model.
The letter says open-weight models can:
- diffuse AI benefits across more sectors and organizations
- strengthen competition and keep gains from concentrating in a few hands
- improve customer control and reduce lock-in
- support safety and security by enabling broader testing, red-teaming, and vulnerability discovery
It also argues policymakers should expand access to compute, shared training assets, and avoid premature restrictions on open models or distillation techniques that could stifle innovation.
