Kalanick’s Atoms raises $1.7 billion to build industrial automation systems

Travis Kalanick’s industrial automation company Atoms has raised $1.7 billion, led by Andreessen Horowitz, with Ben Horowitz set to join the board.
The round also includes Bain Capital, Fifth Wall, Chemistry, K5 Global, SV Angel, Alpha Square Group, plus debt support from Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Barclays. Uber is also participating in the financing.
Atoms is not positioning itself as a single robot product company. It is building across three areas:
- Atoms Food: automation for kitchens and food production
- Atoms Mining: autonomous systems for mining and heavy industry, building on Pronto’s technology
- Atoms Transport: a mobile platform for industrial robots
The article frames this as Kalanick’s long-running effort to use software to reorganize the physical world, moving from Uber and CloudKitchens into a broader industrial automation stack.
