Travis Kalanick's industrial AI company Atoms raised $1.7 billion in a round led by a16z, with participation from Bain Capital, Fifth Wall and even Uber.
The company, which evolved from CloudKitchens and recently acquired Pronto, is expanding from kitchen automation into mining, transportation and other heavy-industry use cases.
- Kalanick has stayed out of the spotlight since leaving Uber in 2017.
- Atoms is positioning itself as a long-term bet on bringing software into the physical world.
- The company faces the usual industrial robotics hurdles: deployment complexity, supply chains, safety and long commercialization cycles.
