AI-assisted chip design at Synopsys has moved faster than expected
Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi says AI-driven chip design has advanced much faster than he expected, and he now frames the field as roughly L4 on a staged path similar to autonomous driving.
He says the biggest gains are in front-end chip design and verification, where customers are already using around six to eight agents to generate and validate chip-description language. That part of the workflow looks increasingly like software engineering. The physical implementation side, however, still needs substantial human intervention.
Ghazi also says the pace of improvement has accelerated because foundation-model capabilities and fine-tuning for specific tasks have both improved quickly.
