Gary Marcus says AGI may come this century, but pure LLMs still won’t get there

Gary Marcus says he never claimed AGI would not arrive: he has long argued it is likely this century, possibly as soon as next decade. He reiterates that pure LLMs would not get there, while neuro-symbolic components, tools, loops, and harnesses appear necessary but still insufficient.
He adds that his earlier predictions and criteria — including his 2020 Next Decade essay, a debate with Grady Booch, and his bets/essays on Substack — have so far been either correct or still looking promising.
