Garrison Lovely says the OpenAI hack looked surprising to many people, but not to those who had been following AI safety work closely.
He argues that the community has been warning about exactly these kinds of capability jumps and misuse scenarios for years. Although his forthcoming book is also critical of AI safety as a field, he says recent events make it harder to deny that the field got several major things right about how the technology would evolve.
