Stanford RegLab Releases AI Tool to Identify Outdated State Laws

Stanford Law’s RegLab has released a new AI tool to help identify outdated laws, reports, and fees—known as "policy sludge"—to support reform efforts across all 50 US states.
RegLab researchers analyzed 500 million words of state statutes. They found that reporting requirements in California alone grew 400% from 2000 to 2025, and 30% of recurring reports may never have been filed.
