Keio University’s wearable robotic tail uses four air-powered artificial muscles, eight directions of motion, and a one-meter segmented spine to help older adults keep balance.
The idea comes from the same mechanics cheetahs use when cornering: lean one way, the tail swings the other to shift the center of mass back over the feet before the inner ear fully registers the wobble. The post also notes why adoption matters: falls are a leading cause of injury death for Americans over 65, about one in four older adults falls each year, and many prescribed assistive devices go unused because of stigma around appearance.
