ATOMS raises $1.7B as it argues specialized robots beat humanoids on real work

ATOMS says it has raised a $1.7B equity investment led by a16z, with Ben Horowitz joining the board, and has merged its various businesses into a single equity structure.
The accompanying material argues for specialized robotics over humanoids: a robotic housekeeper has to handle many low-volume tasks in messy homes, but an industrial kitchen making 1,000 pancakes an hour is a better fit for purpose-built machines. The post also warns that humanoid demos often rely on dance or martial-arts spectacle, while the real opportunity is in robots that can make a living doing a specific job.
