DeepSeek says it is still far from a full commercialization pivot

In a quoted interview slide, DeepSeek says it is “still far from a full pivot to commercialization.” The company says it initially priced one model relatively high because it feared demand would be too strong, then later cut the price to one quarter of the original level.

The slide says the price cuts were welcomed internally because DeepSeek’s goal is to let people use its models broadly. It also argues that lower cost is a product of its architecture and a way to stay efficient when compute is scarce.

DeepSeek adds that selling APIs is relatively straightforward for it: it can keep the API with very little customer support and no sales team, while users come on their own. The company says it has been commercializing all along, but a full commercialization pivot is still “very far off.”
