Cursor Launches Router to Auto-Pick Models, Claims 60% Cost Reduction

AI coding tool Cursor has officially launched Cursor Router. Instead of manually selecting models, the router automatically assigns the most appropriate LLM for each sub-task based on measured quality against cost. The team claims it achieves level-5 performance for 60% less cost.
However, the original poster remains skeptical about its real-world effectiveness, noting that OpenAI previously tried a similar approach and claimed success before it quietly underperformed. Still, they admit it is directionally the right step for AI coding workflows.
