ChatGPT's premature context compaction sabotages outputs, users report
vonerrant · reddit · 2026-07-23
A ChatGPT Pro user reported a severe premature context compaction issue while using GPT-5.6 sol on the web portal. The model automatically compacts context immediately after ingesting inputs, before it actually performs any work or reviews the data.
This workflow defect causes the model to lose crucial task details, resulting in inaccurate and faulty outputs. A self-diagnosis by GPT classified the issue as a state-management defect or an overly aggressive compaction policy, rendering the model practically unusable for complex tasks.
