Retrofitting 3D Objects with Capacitive Sensing: SIGGRAPH 2026 Paper

cholz · x · 2026-07-23

This research, accepted to ACM SIGGRAPH 2026, introduces a method to retrofit existing 3D objects (like a bunny, mouse, bowl, and spoon) with surface-conforming capacitive touch sensing.

Fabrication Process: The technique unfolds 3D curves into 2D traces, vinyl-cuts them from a thin Kapton-copper laminate, and uses projection guidance for precise attachment.

Performance: The fabricated prototypes achieved a mean touch localization error of just 0.65-1.6 mm with a strong signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
