a16z backs Atoms, an ‘industrial AI’ startup targeting physical work

Atoms says it has been building in stealth for 8 years to “digitize the physical world,” and a16z is backing the company with Ben Horowitz joining the board.

The startup frames its thesis around a future where robots do most of the menial work in the world of atoms—moving, transforming, and storing physical goods. It says it already has three verticals:

The pitch is that these are all trillion-dollar industries, and that “industrial AI” will make people more productive in the physical world the way computers did for digital information.
