Claude Code Update: Disables Nested Subagents by Default
sidjustice_ · x · 2026-07-22
Claude Code v2.1.217 has been released with significant updates to subagent behavior. By default, subagents no longer spawn nested subagents. To allow nesting again, users must set the CLAUDECODEMAXSUBAGENTSPAWNDEPTH environment variable. The same release also caps concurrent subagents at 20, configurable via CLAUDECODEMAXCONCURRENTSUBAGENTS.
