Beyond Prompting: New Paper Introduces 'Representation Programs' for AI Optimization

mrdrozdov · x · 2026-07-22

The author shared a new research paper introducing the concept of 'Representation Programs.' The study suggests that after years of optimizing model weights and, more recently, prompts, the next optimization frontier for AI systems might be directly optimizing the executable programs that shape how systems represent information, retrieve, and reason.

The author further noted that while this paradigm currently applies only to the representation layer, it could eventually extend to Ranking Programs, Search Inference Programs, Agent Harness Programs, Memory Programs, and even Training Programs.
