Chamath Slams 'China Threat' as Smokescreen to Protect Frontier AI Labs
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-07-22
Investor Chamath and AI influencer Rohan Paul argue that frontier AI labs are using the 'China threat' narrative to lobby the US government for protection. They claim this is merely a smokescreen to safeguard the equity of a few investors rather than a genuine national security concern.
They point out that the model layer is only a fraction of the broader AI economy. If the cost of running these models drops by 10X or 100X, it would act as rocket fuel for the rest of the industry. The very price drops that frontier labs fear could actually enlarge the entire market pie, benefiting CPUs, GPUs, hyperscalers, and other hardware ecosystems.
