WAIC awards highlight an edge multimodal model paper and ChatDev, the multi-agent software framework

Two research threads from the 2026 WAIC Young Outstanding Paper Awards highlight both edge multimodal models and multi-agent software development.

Yao Yuan from Tsinghua and MiniCPM ecosystem received the Young Outstanding Paper Award for a Nature Communications paper on efficiently building and deploying GPT-4V-level multimodal capabilities on constrained edge devices. The post says the work has over 1,300 Google Scholar citations and that MiniCPM-V has repeatedly topped Hugging Face, GitHub, and Papers With Code trending lists.
The post also notes downstream adoption in production vehicles and commercial scenarios, including Geely Galaxy, SAIC Volkswagen, Changan Mazda, and Samsung Galaxy AI.
Qian Chen received a nomination for ChatDev: Communicative Agents for Software Development in ACL 2024, described here as the first multi-agent collaborative software development framework. The post cites more than 30,000 GitHub stars, recognition by NVIDIA as one of five enterprise-grade agent frameworks, and the paper’s strong citation performance at ACL 2024.
