Coding Agents Slash Reverse-Engineering Costs, Ushering Personal Automation Boom

The author notes a growing trend of people using coding agents to reverse-engineer and automate home devices. Previously, while technically feasible, reverse-engineering private devices suffered from a poor return on investment (ROI) and the looming threat of high maintenance costs due to undocumented APIs.
However, the widespread use of AI coding assistants has completely disrupted this equation. It drastically reduces the effort and trial-and-error costs required to build automations. Even if APIs change and break existing code in the future, the cheap cost of rewriting code removes the psychological baggage of maintenance, making personal automation projects much more accessible.
