Chollet argues that AI capabilities have always followed a "spiky" distribution: achieving superhuman performance in a few narrow domains while remaining practically useless elsewhere.

He points out that the biggest marketing trick in the AI industry is convincing people that these isolated peaks of capability represent the "floor," thereby grossly exaggerating the system's general intelligence.
