Comparing 3 AI Data Tools: Why Databricks Genie Wins

The author conducted a hands-on comparison of three mainstream natural-language-to-data tools: Databricks AI/BI Genie, Snowflake Cortex Analyst, and Power BI Copilot. Databricks Genie won by a significant margin for the following reasons:
- Out-of-the-box readiness: Cortex and Copilot require manually building semantic models or extensive synonym/description configuration. Genie, however, directly reads existing metadata from the Unity Catalog, making onboarding incredibly fast.
- High transparency: Genie always displays the generated SQL code for easy logic verification, unlike Copilot's often baffling black-box conclusions.
- Agentic features: When faced with ambiguous queries, Genie proactively asks clarifying questions. It also supports guiding and reinforcing the model by inputting example SQL, making it much more robust in complex multi-table joins.
Strengths of other tools: Copilot integrates deeply with the Microsoft ecosystem, making it ideal for executives viewing reports; Cortex offers a convenient REST API for embedding into custom apps. However, considering conversational analysis quality and controllability, Genie is the top choice for developers.
