Can AI Have "Emotions"?
pickover · x · 2026-07-20
This post quotes a perspective from a TIME article:
- Language models represent words and concepts as points in a high-dimensional space, so "being able to represent emotions" does not equate to "actually feeling emotions."
- At this stage, our understanding of consciousness itself is insufficient to easily assert whether AI possesses consciousness.
- AI is not a "flat mirror" that merely mechanically regurgitates training data; its internal structure affects its output behavior. Whether these internal states are sufficient to support consciousness, and whether AI truly "understands" the content it generates, remains an unresolved philosophical question.
