Qwen3.8 Preview Debuts, Open-Source Release Imminent
measure_plan · x · 2026-07-19
Alibaba's Qwen3.8 preview is live, which the author believes marks Alibaba's strong return to open-source competition. The model is around 2.4T parameters and will be open-sourced after the official release.
The preview Qwen3.8-Max-Preview has been integrated into Alibaba's Token Plan, Qoder, and QoderWork. In Cline testing, it feels close to 4.8. Internal evaluations show clear win/loss differences against Kimi K3, GLM-5.2, and Qwen3.7-Max in Coding and Cowork tasks, though it still lags behind the top closed-source model, Fable 5.
The author notes that domestic open-source models are closing the gap with the best, while being more candid about their standing rather than blindly claiming to be "number one globally"—an approach more credible than inflated benchmarks.
