AI Designs Low-Visibility Spinning Drone

A research team at Northwestern University created a low-visibility spinning drone called Phantom Twist. It rotates the entire drone to exploit the human eye's perception of motion blur, reducing visibility, unlike traditional quadcopters where only the propellers spin and the body remains clear.
Using AI-driven computational design, the team enumerated about 20,000 drone structure concepts, optimizing motor, battery, electronics, and counterweight placement while ensuring flight capability. The prototype is reportedly over 10 times less visible than a same-sized traditional quadcopter. However, it is still experimental, not fully invisible, still audible, and demonstrations are limited.
