In response to Dean Ball's controversial view that open-source AI is "decelerationist," this post refutes and explores the topic.
The author argues that open source is not a decelerator; rather, it is the core driver of market competition. Having numerous participants collectively pushing the technological frontier accelerates us toward a prosperous future far more effectively than a few giant corporations monopolizing resources. Previous analyses have suggested that open-source AI is viewed as a threat because its popularization could ultimately destroy the business models of major AI labs, causing them to lose their R&D funding.
