Replit Proposes the "Self-Driving Company"

Replit CEO Amjad Masad introduced a new organizational paradigm: the Self-Driving Company. The core idea isn't to replace employees with AI, but to let humans focus on goals, priorities, and ultimate accountability, while delegating information gathering, task execution, result verification, and routine collaboration to multiple AI agents working together.

Scaled Agent Usage is Already Happening Internally

Over the past six months, Replit has seen a massive boost in engineering output. Per-capita output for fixed contributors increased 2.9x, and overall lines of code committed grew 5.8x. Meanwhile, code review latency, rollbacks, and incidents haven't worsened—in fact, quality metrics have improved. A key driver is integrating agents directly into engineering workflows to:

Investigate production incidents
Review PRs
Answer internal questions
Analyze business data
Triage customer support tickets
Assist sales and marketing with prep materials

They also detailed their engineering infrastructure: micro-VMs, remote file systems, access policies, token proxies, audit logs, and Zero Trust networks, allowing agents to securely access GitHub, GCP, Azure, Slack, Notion, Zendesk, and more.

Beyond Engineering: Expanded Company-Wide

Data teams, PMs, sales, marketing, and support are all using agents to handle time-consuming tasks:

Data teams are adding semantic layers so agents can answer BI questions and auto-generate charts
Sales uses agents to enrich leads and prep client backgrounds
Marketing uses them to draft specs and launch materials
Support uses them to investigate tickets and escalate via standard procedures

The author concludes that humans aren't being automated away; they are being "promoted" into roles driven more by outcomes and judgment.
