OpenAI Built Custom Chip in 9 Months
thehiphopswami · x · 2026-07-17
OpenAI's compute lead Sachin Katti revealed that the company's custom chip, Jalapeño, went from design to completion in just 9 months, calling it one of the fastest paces he has seen in his career.
He attributed this to:
- A team with extensive experience from Google's TPU division
- A strong partnership with Broadcom
- OpenAI's clear understanding of what future models will need, enabling faster chip design decisions
He also noted that OpenAI's compute and revenue have both grown 3x, with demand far exceeding compute supply. His biggest concern isn't a lack of demand, but rather "not building fast enough."
