Linus Torvalds: Linux is Not Anti-AI

JoshuaJBouw · x · 2026-07-16

Linux creator Linus Torvalds stated that Linux is not an "anti-AI project" and that AI has become an obviously useful tool. He noted that while AI's value was debatable a year ago, most critics today simply "haven't actually used it." Nobody is forced to adopt AI, and those wanting anti-AI projects can fork the code or leave. The post also mentions that although he viewed AI as mostly marketing in 2024, he now uses AI-generated Python for personal projects, and the Linux kernel accepts AI-assisted code provided it is properly disclosed.
