The Three Tiers of AI Task Intervention

The author categorizes AI intervention in tasks into three tiers:
- Read-only: Read-only analysis where AI observes and reports findings with almost zero risk, making it the best starting point for any new task.
- Prep for approval: AI drafts the work first, and a human reviews it before it is sent or executed. This is the most suitable tier for most real-world work.
- Full autonomy: Fully automated execution, which is only appropriate for strictly rule-based scenarios with little to no ambiguity in judgment, such as auto-updating a spreadsheet after a form submission.
The author notes that when building systems for clients, they repeatedly see two extremes: people who immediately associate "AI agent" with high-risk autonomy and dare not automate anything, and others who rush into full automation and fail due to a lack of human fallbacks. The conclusion: all new tasks should start as read-only, scale up gradually after validation, and most will rationally settle in the middle tier.
