Study on AI Tutors in Higher Education

This German university study analyzed real-world usage logs from 76,485 distance learners at IU International University, making it one of the largest studies on AI teaching assistants in higher education to date.
Core findings include:
- 57% of students actively used the AI tutor within a month.
- Gen Z had the highest adoption rate at 64%, followed by Gen Y at 51%, and Boomers at 38%.
- Significant disciplinary differences: Pedagogy and Psychology saw the most usage, while Architecture and Design saw the least.
- Usage patterns mirrored "work tools," peaking on weekdays between 10 AM and 4 PM, with notable drops on weekends. Part-time students were more likely to use it at night.
The authors concluded that there is no "one-size-fits-all" effect for AI teaching assistants; its impact is highly sensitive to who is using it, what they are studying, and when.
