Economists Sign Joint Statement on AI Economic Impact

A group of economists and AI researchers have co-signed a statement, We Must Act Now: A Statement on AI’s Transformation of the Economy, urging increased investment in research on the economic impact of AI.
The signatories argue that as AI becomes more powerful, three key pillars need to be established simultaneously:
- A deeper understanding of AI's impact on employment and economic structure
- Incentive mechanisms and safeguards to ensure AI complements rather than replaces human capabilities
- Appropriate institutions and frameworks to distribute the benefits of technology broadly across society
