Lightning Labs Unveils Bitcoin Micropayment Toolkit for AI Agents

Lightning Labs has released an open-source toolkit to address the inability of AI agents to make autonomous payments. Traditional credit card payments require human identity verification, making them unsuitable for the high-frequency micropayment demands of agents.
The core of this solution is the L402 protocol: after an agent sends an HTTP request and receives a 402 status code (Payment Required), it automatically pays a tiny amount of Bitcoin via the Lightning Network to gain access. The entire process requires no human intervention and takes less than 1 second. Compared to stablecoin solutions like USDC, Lightning micropayments feature extremely low transaction fees. Additionally, the toolkit now supports the MCP protocol, allowing agents built on Claude or GPT to interact directly with Lightning nodes.
