Theft Hits AI Data Center Construction Sites

Reports indicate that AI data center construction sites are becoming prime targets for copper cable and equipment theft. Two recovered trailers near Chicago collectively carried about $1.3 million worth of stolen data center materials.
One trailer contained roughly $300,000 worth of copper wire from an Alabama theft, while the other held about $1 million worth of infrastructure equipment stolen from a Florida site.
The post notes that this is happening against a backdrop of widespread controversy surrounding data centers over their energy consumption, water usage, and strain on local communities, now further compounded by organized theft rings targeting new construction sites.
