Open Source Models Fuel Academic AI Research

This shifts the focus to academia: much of today's AI research relies heavily on open-source models. The open-source ecosystem is thus vital not just for industry applications, but for driving foundational research.
While acknowledging that academic researchers could always use more compute power, the author notes that realistically, open-source models remain one of the few critical enablers allowing them to consistently make meaningful contributions.
