Open Source Models and the AI Safety Barrier
besanushi · x · 2026-07-15
The author argues that the ability of small companies to perform independent AI customization and local deployments relies heavily on open-source models. Without this ecosystem, such capabilities would be either unfeasible or prohibitively expensive.
The discussion also touches on safety and expertise barriers: true experts in AI, safety, and guardrails are scarce. Concentrating these capabilities in the hands of a few dominant players doesn't necessarily make the industry "safer."
