Lawsuit Claims Meta Used AI to Pick Layoff Targets

A lawsuit alleges that Meta relied on internal AI tools rather than direct manager evaluations to screen and rank employees during a layoff of 8,000 staff.
26 laid-off employees have sued in a Northern California federal court, citing systems such as the internal Metamate, a "second brain" agent trained on employee data, keyboard and activity monitoring, AI token usage dashboards, and algorithmic performance calibration tools. The plaintiffs include individuals with disabilities and those who had taken paid medical or family leave.
The complaint also notes that Meta's internal dashboards tagged employees based on their AI tool adoption stage—such as AI Native, AI First, and AI Enabled—factoring these labels into performance reviews.
