AssemblyAI released the Sync API, featuring "instant text return right after speaking" with an official latency of around 134ms.
They categorized speech transcription into three tiers:
- Realtime: Text appears as you speak, suitable for live captions and real-time conversations
- Sync: Returns text immediately after speaking, ideal for short audio and interactive voice flows
- Async: Fetch results after the task concludes, perfect for batch processing and long files
