David Patterson Rebuts AI Regulation: Capping Intelligence Won't Solve Root Causes

Turing Award winner David Patterson has countered Demis Hassabis's view that "AGI is years away and requires a frontier AI regulatory body similar to FINRA."
Patterson argues that heavily funding AI regulatory agencies will only breed bureaucracy; to justify their jobs, regulators will find endless reasons to impose restrictions, ultimately destroying innovation. He notes that smart people fear losing their monopoly on intelligence, but the supposed risks posed by AI (like cybersecurity threats and bioweapons) can already be perpetrated by smart individuals today.
He contends that the real solution isn't restricting intelligence, but addressing underlying real-world issues: if it's a nuclear threat, push for global nuclear disarmament; if it's cybersecurity, strengthen defenses and prosecute hackers. Giving everyone in the world equal capabilities is the right way to navigate AGI.
