LLMs Need "Sleep" to Consolidate Memory

This work proposes that LLMs might require a "sleep"-like phase: without new data input, the model first consolidates fragile short-term memories into more stable long-term memories, and then recursively self-improves through a "dreaming" process.
The authors introduce a new form of distillation called Knowledge Seeding (KS), where a smaller model distills knowledge into a larger one. Experiments show that this phase improves performance in continuous learning and reasoning tasks, while partially mitigating catastrophic forgetting.
