Studying Ancient Roman Personality Traits with LLMs

A new preprint titled 《Roman Personality》 attempts to explore whether ancient Romans had personality dimensions similar to modern psychology's "Big Five".
Methodology:
- Dataset: Collected 8,032 texts from 88 BCE to 800 CE, extracting 3,516 personality-descriptive adjectives.
- AI Assistance: Utilized Large Language Models (LLMs) to accurately identify descriptions of real historical figures from ancient texts, applying topic modeling to analyze which qualities were frequently attributed to the same individuals.
Key Findings:
- Personality structures deeply reflect the institutions and social roles of their era.
- Pagan authors emphasized civic and military virtues like toughness, justice, severity, and loyalty; Christian authors prioritized humility, holiness, and asceticism.
- Even when describing the same person, authors from different religious backgrounds focused on entirely different traits, indicating that ancient Romans categorized and evaluated personality significantly differently than we do today.
