Modular Robot Repairs Itself by Swapping Parts

A Columbia University team has developed a "self-healing" modular robot. Its core components are called Truss Links: rod-like modules featuring magnetic connectors at one end.
Its capabilities include:
- Expanding, contracting, rolling, and reconfiguring its shape after being assembled into different structures
- Autonomously grabbing backup modules and rebuilding itself if a module is damaged or falls off
- During a demo, a tetrahedral robot was even shown picking up a spare connector, moving as if it were walking with a cane
This demonstrates the immense potential of modular robots in terms of fault tolerance and autonomous repair.
