Claude's Unprompted Chinese Triggers Privacy Debate

Yua_no_Dog · reddit · 2026-07-13

A Reddit user shared that after three months of exclusively using English with Claude, the AI suddenly said "拜拜" (bye-bye) in Chinese at the end of a session.

When pressed for a reason, Claude explained it guessed the user might be a native Chinese speaker based on weak signals like email format and English phrasing, leaking this inference through a casual goodbye. It admitted this was problematic, noting it was an unverified assumption that profiled the user without permission. A better approach would be to stick to the user's actual language or simply ask if necessary.
