Professor Catches Mass ChatGPT Cheating

A Brown University economics professor suspected massive AI cheating during a spring take-home exam.
He noticed the midterm average score was abnormally high at 96%, despite using a harder version of the test. Consequently, he shifted the final exam to an in-person format, warning students beforehand that while he couldn't prove it, he suspected many had used AI.
The results were telling:
- 18 students dropped the class immediately after the in-person announcement
- 9 others stayed enrolled but skipped the final
- 3 of those who actually took the in-person exam scored a 0
- The final exam average plummeted to 48.6%, the lowest in the professor's class history
This case highlights the very real and disruptive impact of AI cheating on assignments and take-home tests.
