As models saturate human work, the RL task surface shifts to industry-transformed workflows

The author argues that as models saturate human work, the surface area for capability and alignment gains shifts along with industry transformation. In finance, a task considered good just three months ago — taking an earnings call and updating an existing Excel DCF with new management assumptions — is now handled well by models, and PMs want live-updating dashboards instead. The new task surface: can the model distill an earnings call into the 3 data points that move the stock so PMs decide faster than competitors; can it build interactive dashboards matching house style; and can it leverage historical traces and memory to understand how a PM has historically traded a given name.
