Concept for Urban Directional Noise Cancellation via Acoustics Foundation Model

The author explores the idea of achieving directional urban noise cancellation using acoustic theory. According to the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral theorem, a continuous speaker "shell" could theoretically perfectly cancel any sound waves. However, perfect cancellation is impossible with real-world discrete speakers.

As a compromise, the author suggests abandoning global noise reduction and instead using discrete speakers to minimize noise in human activity zones, acting like invisible noise-canceling headphones for pedestrians. Simulations show that this "silent shadow" can follow human movement. The author believes this paves the way for developing an "acoustics foundation model" and provides simulation code alongside the proposal.
